It’s been a year since I came out.

Well, since I was forced to come out. When I look back on how much I’ve changed in the past year it’s really astounding. Standing up against my family’s religious beliefs and fighting for a voice in my own life have been the two greatest things I have accomplished. I learnt how to put myself first in my own life, instead of hiding and trying to make everyone else happy. Since I came out, not only have I grown myself, but I have been able to help other people with similar issues in their lives. I have reached out to other kids at school and people in my community, and helped them to except who they are. I have stood up against homophobia at school and helped the ignorant see through stereotypes and myths about LGBTQ people. Starting a Queer Straight Alliance at my school is definitely a highlight of the last year; creating a safe place for kids to be themselves and not worry about the judgements of the outside world. Now that I have accepted myself I have been able to help others do the same and that to me, is quite significant. I plan to continue fighting for gay rights and offering support where I can give it. I really don’t mean to sound self-righteous or anything, it’s just nice to give myself a little pat on the back once in a while. This past year has been the worst and the best time of my life, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

STOP NC Amendment One (SB514)

Same-sex marriage is already illegal in North Carolina. Which means voting AGAINST Amendment One is not a vote to legalize same-sex marriage.

Amendment One (SB514) is a proposed change to Article 14 of the North Carolina State Constitution that will appear before the voters on the May 8, 2012 primary ballot across North Carolina. Amendment One is not only an ideological assault on the civil rights of LGBT North Carolinians, it’s also a poorly

written law that will have serious negative, unintended and harmful consequences on North Carolina’s children, families, seniors, women and businesses.

Stating that, “Marriage between a man and a woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State,” Amendment One aims to turn all unmarried couples — whether same-sex or opposite-sex — into second-class citizens unworthy of basic dignity and fair treatment.
